It was a day of celebration Serena Wright worried she might not ever see.

But on Friday – just a couple of hours ago – the executive director of the Erath County Humane Society watched the groundbreaking of the shelter’s new facility.

“It’s a dream come true,” Serena told Beneath the Surface News. “I don’t know what else to say. I am really speechless that this is finally happening.”

The new facility, located at 1300 County Road 454 in Stephenville, will include separate areas for dogs and cats and space to quarantine sick animals, nursing mothers and strays.

A covered walkway will lead from the lobby and offices to the back of the facility where there will be about 70 indoor/outdoor kennels.

“One of the things we are most excited about is that there will space for the animals to run and play outside,” Serena said. “And when it rains, we won’t have to worry about flooding and finding foster families to house the dogs.”

Friday’s groundbreaking was the first phase of the project and will include leveling the property, pouring foundation, plumbing, electricity and constructing the shell of the building.

The ECHS board of directors is still raising money for the project.

“We are about ½ way there,” Serena said.

You can make a tax-exempt donation to the new shelter through PayPal or Venmo @echs19.

Checks can be mailed to Erath County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2006, Stephenville, TX 76401.

Tax-exempt letters with the 501(c)(3) status and EIN will be given upon request.
