Young Stephenville resident Daylee Powe was finally able to take on something she’s been looking forward to – the Chisolm Challenge.
Daylee, an eight-year-old second grader at Chamberlin Elementary, took part in the Chisolm Challenge on Tuesday.
“The Chisolm Challenge is a competitive horse show for riders with disabilities that is a part of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo,” Daylee’s mother Kate Powe told Beneath the Surface News.
“She participated with the new equine assisted therapy center called Freedom in Strides Inc.
"Kailey Ownby is the owner and her riding program has filled a huge need in our community and Daylee would not have had the opportunity to compete this year without her.”
(Fun fact: Kate was a volunteer at the very first Chisolm Challenge 23 years ago.)
Daylee has been riding horses for four years, but this was her first year to compete.
This isn’t Daylee’s first time to do cool stuff.
In 2023, the then five-year-old appeared in the bright lights of Broadway as part of the annual National Down Syndrome Society Times Square Video presentation.

ABOUT THE CHISOLM CHALLENGE
On Jan. 13 and 14, North Texas area therapeutic riding centers will participate in the show.
The equestrians compete in English equitation, western equitation, ranch riding, showmanship, barrels, pole bending, drill team, driving and Trail. All participating centers are PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International) member centers.
This ensures that all competitors have certified instructors, trained horses and recognize and respect all safety requirements.
The benefits of therapeutic horseback riding are well established and enable riders with physical and mental challenges to strengthen their bodies and empower their spirits.

A horse show that promotes and encourages further development provides these competitors the opportunity to show off all their hard work and talents.
Congratulations to Daylee for taking part in such a neat event!
