Parents of students at Morgan Mill ISD say they are concerned about a student who allegedly threatened to bring a “sniper rifle” to school this week.

The student – a second grader – was reportedly on the school bus when the threat was made on Tuesday afternoon.

On Thursday, parents received a message from Morgan Mill ISD Superintendent Wendy Sanders, which states:

“Dear Parents and Guardians,

“This message is to inform you of a safety-related incident that occurred today at Morgan Mill School.

“Earlier today, campus administration became aware that a student made a verbal statement referencing a threat of violence toward the school. The statement was immediately reported to school administrators and law enforcement and investigated in accordance with district safety protocols.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the following steps were taken immediately:

• Campus administration secured the situation and began an investigation.

• District safety personnel and the school's SRO were notified.

• The student involved was removed from the classroom environment pending further action.

• Our campus threat assessment team began reviewing the situation and determining appropriate interventions.

“At this time, there is no evidence of an active or credible threat to students or staff, and normal campus operations have continued. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority.”

Erath County Sheriff Matt Coates said school officials have taken appropriate measures to ensure student safety.

“They have done everything by the book,” Coates said.

“The school has done a great job handling the situation.”

Coates would not comment on the investigation, citing the student’s age.

“We have a deputy at the school full time,” Coates said.

Patricia Loera is a parent of two students who attend the school and overheard the threat when it was reportedly made.

“The parents have been told that the student has been suspended, but we don’t think that is enough. I don’t think the school is taking it seriously because of this child’s age,” Loera told Beneath the Surface News.

“The kid is in the same class as my daughter and they ride the school bus together.

“We don’t know what he is capable of bringing to school. Firearms in the home in this area are common.”

Students at Morgan Mill ISD are on spring break and return to campus on Monday, March 23.

“There are several of us who are prepared to go to the school on Monday to demand that more be done,” Loera said.

When it comes to school shootings, age isn’t always a factor.

In January 2023, a 6-year-old student shot his first grade teacher in the classroom at Richneck Elementary in Newport News, Virginia.

The teacher suffered severe injuries to her hand and chest.

And in 2000, a six-year-old shot and killed a classmate in Mount Morris Township, Michigan.

Superintendent Wendy Sanders and Principal Barrett Hutchison were contacted for comment on the situation, but have not responded.

Ceci Davalos has two children who attend Morgan Mill ISD and said she is very concerned about the situation.

“The child who made the threat is also in my daughter’s class and I don’t want to send my kid to school worried that he could bring a gun or any weapon,” Davalos said.

“I know he is young, but this is a big red flag. There are a number of parents involved and who want answers to what’s going to be done.”
