The race is on to fill the unexpired term of place 4 on the Stephenville ISD board of trustees following the recent resignation of Doug Young.
The board has called a special election to fill the open seat for Saturday, May 2.
Dr. Jill McAngus and Jason Smith have both filed to run for the position.
Beneath the Surface News spoke with both candidates about the reason behind their decision to run for school board.

Dr. Jill McAngus is a Tarleton State University alumni and orthopedic surgeon.
She and her husband have three children (and are expecting a fourth).
“The reason I want to run is because I think it is vital and important for our children and staff that a school board is composed of a diverse set of individuals and thought processes that are dedicated to their well-being and future successes,” McAngus said.
“I thought there would be a benefit to having a mother on the board with a background in business and knowledge of the education system, as my husband is a previous coach and teacher.
“Ultimately, I love this community and want to be a part of continuing to build champions.”
McAngus and her family moved to Stephenville in 2020.
She is a board member for Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council, PTO president, SPARD volunteer coach, past SPARD board member, site host for SHS science students and supports several local organizations like Erath County 4H, Stephenville FFA, Erath County Big Brothers Big Sisters and Cross Timbers Family Services

Jason Smith has lived in Stephenville since 2005 and is a technology professional and adjunct instructor of computer information systems.
“Serving on the school board has been something I’ve thought about for some time, but the timing never seemed quite right,” Smith said.
“When this seat opened up, our family felt it was the right moment to step up and go for it.
“We’re fortunate to have a district that so many people are proud of, and I would be honored to work alongside parents, teachers and community members to keep building on that strong foundation while continuing to plan thoughtfully for the future.”
Smith has coached for SPARD and the Stephenville Soccer Association, is a volunteer of the Watch D.O.G.S. program at Central Elementary, chairs the annual Toys “Fore” Kids golf tournament and served on the committee that developed plans for the Art Briles Stadium.
He and his wife Maddie have two kids in the Stephenville ISD school system.
Early voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, April 20, through Friday, April 24, and Monday, April 27, and Tuesday, April 28, at the new Erath County Annex located at 222 E. College Street in Stephenville.
Polls will be closed on Tuesday, April 21.
