Stephenville is getting a major new travel center that will anchor the city’s north corridor.

Construction on the Cowboy Corner Travel Center, located at 1095 Morgan Mill Road near Atwoods, is underway and expected to be complete by the end of the year.

The $8 million project will include a more than 7,300 square foot convenience store and three quick service restaurants.

“We are working on the restaurants now, but it looks like we are going to have a Sonic, a Honey Ham and barbecue place,” co-owner Michael Cooper told Beneath the Surface News.

Michael and his son Lane Cooper are developing the project and live near Weatherford.

The father/son duo own three other travel centers, and along with the one in Stephenville, they are also building one in Granbury.

Cowboy Express Car Wash in Stephenville is theirs too.

“We love the cowboy culture and really enjoy working with the city,” Michael said.

“One of things that will set this travel center apart from other gas stations is that it’s locally owned and we have a lot of pride in that – from the bathrooms to the food and drinks we serve.

“We are going to try and service the needs of what people want.”

Jeff Sandford, president of Stephenville Economic Development Authority, said working with the Coopers has been a pleasure.

“As Stephenville continues to expand, it has been important to strategically consider the types of development opportunities which both serve and positively impact our citizens and visitors,” Sandford said.

“SEDA appreciates the vision of the Cooper family, which adds to that effort and will certainly check off a much-needed and requested box in that sector of our community.”

The Coopers say they plan to be very active in the community, supporting local school and civic organizations.
