Beneath the Book Club: It’s time to discuss October’s ‘witchy’ read. I hoped you liked it better than I did.

There is nothing negative I can say about The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna.

The book was cute, well-written and should have been just what I needed to get into the spirit of Halloween.

Turns out I’m not wholesome enough to enjoy a cute book. It takes a little more edge-of-your-seatness and a lot less whimsy to hold my attention.

In fact, I barely made it to the end.

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is about Mika Moon, a British witch who is good at hiding her magic.

As an orphan, Mika grew up as a loner and largely keeps to herself except for an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch.

When she receives an unexpected message asking her to travel to the Nowhere House, Mika is thrust into a situation with an interesting cast of characters and three young witches she is asked to mentor.

A pending (and very unexciting) threat is introduced into the storyline a little too late and even a romantic narrative wasn’t enough to save the plot.

I don’t mind a slow burn, but for me, this book never reached lukewarm.

I give it a 4.
