Two construction workers injured when exterior of First Baptist Church partially collapses.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene of First Baptist Church Stephenville on Wednesday after receiving reports that part of the building had collapsed during repairs.

Employees of First Baptist Church Stephenville said it sounded like an explosion occurred when part of the front exterior of the education building collapsed Wednesday afternoon during renovations.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene they found two constructions workers who had been injured, Captain James Gresham with the Stephenville Police Department said.

One was airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital and the other was taken by ambulance to Texas Health Stephenville.

"It sounded like an explosion and there was so much smoke," the female employee said.

Students enrolled at Kinderbridge Preschool were inside the building when the accident happened, but thankfully, none of them were injured.

“The students were taken out of the building immediately and brought to the sanctuary until their parents picked them up,” the employee said.

Pastor Ken May said the accident happened at 1:58 p.m. while a construction crew worked on the building's facade as part of a historical renovation that was expected to be complete on Thursday.

"We are asking everyone to be in prayer for those who were injured," Pastor May said. "The last update I received is that the injuries don't appear to be life threatening."

As police and fire crews continued to work the scene late Wednesday afternoon, Green Street remained closed to thru traffic and all Wednesday night classes have been cancelled.
