The next time you wake up in Austin, head to Kerbey Lane Café for breakfast.

A perfectly whipped soy latte I enjoyed at Kerbey Lane.

The Husband has a strange dislike for brunch.

I think it stems from past experiences with those enormous buffets that pair eggs benedict next to stations dishing out prime rib and spaghetti.

All those choices are too much for him, and, while trying to get his money’s worth, stuffs himself to a level of unpleasantness.

So when it comes to morning meals, The Husband stays firmly in the breakfast OR lunch lane and only goes to brunch at places where menus clearly offer that distinction.

On a recent weekend in Austin, I wanted brunch with the kids (our oldest son lives there) before heading home.

A little research led us to Kerbey Lane Café on a street called, you guess it, Kerbey Lane.

The restaurant is a brightly-colored bungalow with outdoor seating and a mouth-watering menu.

Our group gathered in a sun-filled room and I ordered my favorite – a soy latte - that was whipped up beautifully and served in an over-sized ceramic coffee mug.

We were off to a good start.

The breakfast menu is vast; covering all the things you might expect like traditional bacon and egg dishes, pancakes, French toast and omelets.

But it was the unexpected we reached for.

Because I was on vacation and not counting calories, I ordered the chicken and pancakes; a dish similar to chicken and waffles and equally delicious.

The fried chicken was sliced thin and served on top of cinnamon beignet pancakes drizzled with a spicy maple buffalo sauce and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

The rest of the gang tried the crispy chicken benedict, Texas avocado toast benedict and the Kerbey kickstart.

It was all delicious and we vowed to go back soon to try the lemon poppy seed French toast and eggs Francisco.

The next time you are in Austin, swing by the happy place on Kerbey Lane and order a breakfast that will make your taste buds tingle and your senses sing.
