Sheriff's official says new Covid scam targeting Erath County residents.

Updated: Oct 10

Chief Deputy Jeremy Woodruff with the Erath County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a new scam circulating the area.

He told Beneath the Surface News that the sheriff’s office received three calls on Monday from Erath County residents claiming they had received a call from a law enforcement official stating that a warrant for their arrest had been issued for not paying back Covid reimbursements and loans.

One of the potential victims was told they owed $7,000 in unpaid fees and instructed to go to Allsup's to get a gift card.

The calls were made from 254-454-2033 and the scammer is using the name “Investigator Flye.”

“None of the victims fell for it and instead called us,” Woodruff said.

“As usual, law enforcement will never demand money for warrants. If you get a call like this, contact our office or the Stephenville Police Department before handing over any money.”
