Officials seize more than 100 animals living with inadequate food, water and shelter in Erath County.

Calling it the largest animal seizure in Erath County’s history, more than 100 dogs, hamsters, rats, reptiles, birds, horses, goats, pigs and a ferret were rescued on Monday from a property located on County Road 712.

A suspect has been identified and could face possible charges of cruelty to non-livestock animals and cruelty to livestock, both Class A misdemeanors.

A press release from the Erath County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation began about two weeks ago when deputies were called about a dead animal found on a neighbor’s property.

After a warrant was issued, law enforcement officials discovered more than 100 animals in poor condition, living without adequate food, water or shelter.

“During the investigation and seizure, deputies discovered carcasses of dead domesticated and livestock animals in various stages of decomposition on the property,” the release states.

All surviving animals are being cared for by local veterinarians until permanent homes can be found.

Serena Wright, executive director of Erath County Humane Society, was on scene during the seizure.

“The conditions were terrible; it was rough,” Serena told Beneath the Surface News. “The surviving animals are being quarantined until there is a hearing on what should happen next.”
