I remember when our kids were young and we would search for something fun and affordable to do for Spring Break.

Our kids always enjoyed an outdoor adventure, so when The Husband and I paid a visit last weekend to Longhorn Cavern State Park, I thought, ‘Man, this would be a fun thing for local families.’”

Longhorn Cavern State Park is located near Burnet and touring its cave is like taking a grand adventure back in time.

You’ll walk through “Crystal City and the Hall of Diamonds,” an area of sparkly calcite crystals (and my favorite) and the spectacular “Hall of Marble” (my second favorite) and see a giant sinkhole.

We even saw a bat (but just one) and he never moved from his spot inside the cave. No one screamed.

The guides are so knowledgeable and make the tour super interesting.

In the 1840s a young girl was held captive by Indians and rescued by a Texas Ranger she later married (or so the story goes).

In the 1860s, bat guano collected from the cavern was used to produce gunpowder and in the 1930s, the cave became an underground nightclub and restaurant.

See what I mean? Fascinating.

The caves are cool (about 68 degrees), so you won’t get hot and there’s not a lot of difficult walking.

The path is pretty even, but you should wear comfy shoes and watch where you step.

Pack a lunch and enjoy it on the grounds of the park where there are picnic tables, a store and snack bar.

We did the 90-minute Cavern Walking Tour for $24.25/per person.

But there is a Blacklight Cavern Tour and Wild Cave Tour for the more adventurous.

Anyway, check it out!

(And keep scrolling for more photos.)
