Help fight food insecurity by working in Stephenville's community garden this weekend.
Updated: Sep 28
If you like to get your hands dirty, you’ll have the chance this weekend when Stephenville’s 20th Century Club hosts a community garden workday from 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Individuals and groups are invited to come out and work in the garden located at 1302 Harbin Drive between the First Presbyterian Church and Lacy Funeral Home.
“The community garden provides fresh produce to six food pantries across Erath County throughout the year,” club member Kathy Horak Smith told Beneath the Surface News.
Parking is available at the church or across the street at Jaycee Park.
Then head to Atwoods where club members will be selling a lunch of a hotdog, drink and chips, along with various baked goods from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
All proceeds benefit the Erath County community garden.
Saturday’s events are part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ National Day of Service to Fight Food Insecurities.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 34 million people in the U.S. are food insecure, nine million children are hungry and 100 percent of U.S. counties have families suffering from food insecurity.
“These statistics are staggering,” said Diane Casey, GFWC Stephenville 20th Century Club president.
“GFWC Clubwomen work tirelessly to be of service to their local communities. Hunger and food insecurity represents an issue that if everyone works together, no one in the United States needs to suffer.”
