The parents of a young man killed by a gunshot in Stephenville last week is setting the record straight about their son.
Twenty-three-year-old Devonte Johnson was fatally shot by an acquaintance - 20-year-old Lorena Miranda – at a home in the 300 block of S. Lillian Ave. on April 3.
His parents, Arminthe Pyrnneau and Andre Johnson, called Beneath the Surface News on Friday from Lacy Funeral Home where they were making final arrangements to have their beloved son laid to rest.
“There is a narrative out there that this was a drug deal gone bad, and there is no way that is the case,” his father Andre said.
“Devonte has never been involved in using or selling drugs.”
Devonte moved to Stephenville in June and had planned to enroll at Tarleton State University.
He hoped to become an auto mechanic.
Andre said Devonte met Lorena Miranda through his work.
“She would deliver auto parts to the place where he was working,” Andre said.
“They had known each other for just a short time, and as far as we know, they were not romantically involved.”
His parents said he had found happiness in Stephenville and had embraced “cowboy country.”
As a kid, Devonte loved playing basketball.
“He was a light to everyone he met,” Andre said.
“Since his passing, we are learning a lot about how caring and how protective he was to his friends.
“He was just an amazing young man.”
Devonte is being taken back to Florida where he will be laid to rest next Saturday.
