Commissioners meet after Justice of the Peace Bart Greenway passes; here’s what happens next.

Erath County is mourning the loss of a beloved elected official.

Justice of the Peace Bart Greenway passed away on Monday morning at the age of 61.

County Judge Alfonso Campos told Beneath the Surface News on Tuesday that commissioners were already scheduled to meet on Monday and had the opportunity to discuss what measures they would take to ensure that the justice of the peace’s duties are met.

Judge Greenway was facing re-election next year and had said that he planned to seek another term.

With the Primary Election just a few months away (March 1), Campos said commissioners have tentatively decided not to appoint an interim.

“We are sensitive to the fact that an appointment could give someone an unfair advantage in the race,” he said. “When an officeholder dies, the chief deputy can step up to handle some of the day-to-day responsibilities.

“I will be speaking with that person next week.”

If the race for justice of the peace extends to November, Campos said commissioners could then decide to appoint an interim.

A visitation for Judge Greenway will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, at Harrell Funeral Home in Dublin.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at First Baptist Church of Dublin followed by a graveside service at Alexander Cemetery.
