Voters opt for change: Huckabee wins bid for Erath County judge, Shawver wins race for treasurer.

Erath County voters cleaned house on Tuesday.

Brandon Huckabee will become the next Erath County judge after beating incumbent Alfonso Campos in the Texas Republican Primary and county treasurer Kimberly Barrier lost her bid for a second term to Angie Shawver.

Huckabee received 3,523 votes while Campos received 2,367.

Without a Democratic opponent in November, Huckabee will assume office in 2023.

“Thank you to Erath County voters for the confidence you have shown in me as county judge,” Huckabee told Beneath the Surface News. “I’m ready to get to work representing you.”

Campos’ first term as county judge was mired in controversy after he filed a petition to have Barrier removed from office for what he called “incompetency.”

A high-profile hearing on the allegation put the spotlight on fractured county relations that appeared to be fraught with division and strife.

In the end, a judge ruled that Barrier could stay in office, but demanded that changes be made and that county officials work together to fix deficiencies.

But the controversy appeared to have left a bad taste in the mouths of voters who opted for a new county treasurer as well.

Tuesday's final tally of votes: Shawver - 2,832; Barrier – 2,518.
