This hubby didn't want to dance at their wedding, now they're competing in Dancing For the Stars.

Zach and Mayra Hagood

Zach and Mayra Hagood are one of five couples competing in this year’s Dancing For the Stars event benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erath County.

The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 4, at Lone Star Arena.

Zach works at Cain Pool and Spa and is a volunteer firefighter in Dublin. Mayra is an administrative assistant at Prime Metal Buildings.

Beneath the Surface News asked the couple a few questions about their experience so far, and their answers cracked me up.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COMPETE IN DANCING FOR THE STARS?

“Being able to know that we are giving back to only our local children, but knowing how impactful this organization is; the amount they do for our kids and how supportive they are in their dreams and beliefs.

“Our youth is our future and BBBS is helping them be the best they can be by providing them with a ‘big’ that is going to positively influence them!

“Sarah (Weaver) does the best job at putting this all together and all she does throughout the year. We were so thankful to have been asked.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY PRIOR DANCE EXPERIENCE?

“No! Especially not Zach! We only danced to ONE song at our wedding and even then, he was so nervous! I tried to dance with him more and he told me to “get off of him.” LOL!

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE WHILE TRAINING FOR THE COMPETITION?

“Being able to get businesses to sponsor. Being the only Dublin couple, we have tried so hard to market in Dublin, but Dublin is small, locally-owned businesses and due to COVID many have been hit hard.

“We sympathize and always let whoever we ask know that they don’t need to feel obligated to sponsor, but do explain why this organization is so impactful. We have been blessed, though, to be able to have Dublin back us and even have our local schools support our tamale lunch!

“Granny Clarks is also hosting a Team Hagood night! We’ve been so blessed with supportive friends and family as well.

WHICH OF YOU IS THE BETTER DANCER?

“Let’s just say, Zach almost had a heart attack when I told him we were doing this. He’s been nervous since day one, but he is getting better and will rock it on the night of the event.

ANY INJURIES OR MISHAPS?

“During practice one evening.

“There is a move where I pretty much have to do a cartwheel onto Zach and throw my legs over his shoulders…. let’s just say he didn’t catch me, and I didn’t have enough time (from head to ground) to catch myself, so I fell on the ground headfirst.

“My hand ended up being hurt for a few days due to (trying and failing) to catch myself! I got up…said a few not so kind words and then said, ‘Get it together. We’re trying it again!’”

“He was annoyed and just rolled his eyes! We can laugh at it now, but I think Brittany (Thurman) and Sherrie (Evans) thought WWIII was going to happen.

“Most Wednesday’s (we practice on Tuesdays), I have a headache due to being upside down for that move and the amount of blood going to my head. Sometimes by the end of practice I’m dizzy, but it’s so fun!

I can’t wait to show everyone our moves! Other than that, it’s been extremely fun, and we have the best instructors ever!”
