The Stephenville City Council on Tuesday called for a special election to vote for the city’s next mayor following last week’s resignation of Doug Svien.
The election to fill the remainder of Svien’s term, which ends in May 2026, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The filing period to run for the spot will take place from Wednesday, Aug. 6, through Monday, Aug. 18.
Mayor Pro Tem David Baskett will serve in the interim.
Svien was the city’s mayor for the past seven years.
City officials were alerted about his decision to resign in a letter, which cited a desire to slow down after having a stroke last year.
“While I continue to focus on my recovery, I believe this is in the best interest of both my health and the future of this council that I step down at this time,” the letter stated.
Calling his service “the honor of a lifetime,” Svien said he plans to leave the area to move closer to his kids.
