Stephenville ISD Superintendent Matt Underwood is leaving at the end of August to take on an administrative role at Ranger College; becoming the next senior vice president of Erath and Brown counties.

“I have always wanted to try higher education and this is an opportunity I can take without moving my kids,” Underwood told Beneath the Surface News.

In a letter to his staff, Underwood said he plans to submit his letter of resignation to the board of trustees on Monday night.

“The board will be discussing a path forward in the fall semester including the naming of an interim superintendent, superintendent search firms and a timeline for seating a new superintendent,” the letter states. “I have been truly blessed over the last 28 years of service in public education, but our time in Stephenville has been by far the best personally and professionally. I am so excited to see the great things still to come for SISD and will always cherish the relationships built over the last seven years.”

Underwood’s last day with the district will be Aug. 31.

"I am heartbroken to lose Matt; he has done a great job for the district and he will be missed," longtime trustee Sherrie Evans said.
