October’s Hometown Hero is well-known educator who teaches students how to fall in love with music.

His students call him “Mr. C.”

Everyone else knows him as Michael Childs, Stephenville High School’s director of bands.

But today, Mr. C. has a new title - Erath County’s Hometown Hero for the month of October.

The popular educator, who has been a teacher for 31 years, was nominated for the honor by more than 30 students.

Farmers Insurance agent Leslie Walker sponsors the monthly program that awards a local individual with the title of Hometown Hero.

“This month we had over 15 nominations from five different schools in Erath County,” Leslie told Beneath the Surface News. “That just goes to show you what a great job our educators are doing.”

When he’s not sharing his love of music with students, Mr. C., a self-proclaimed “foodie,” enjoys traveling and playing the saxophone.

He and his wife Stephanie have two children, Catlin and Cameron.
