Local event planner talks tricks of the trade for hosting the perfect summer soiree.

Updated: May 7, 2021

Summer is almost here and that can mean only one thing: Fun.

I sat down with local event planner Megan Lutrick, owner of V6 Ranch Weddings and Events, to talk tips and tricks for throwing an amazing summer bash.

From backyard barbecues and holiday celebrations to birthday and graduation parties and weddings, these easy-peasy tips will have all the A-listers begging for an invite.

Megan says the most important thing to remember is that parties don’t have to be complicated to plan.

“Keep it light and airy and have it outdoors,” she said. “And make food, drinks and great company your base to begin.”

And when it comes to decorations, think flowers and balloons.

“Balloons and florals are all the rage right now,” Megan said. “Everywhere I look on social media someone is having a party with a balloon arch or they are showing pictures of a beautifully-set table with a gorgeous floral spray.”

If you are the do-it-yourself type, Megan suggests heading to HEB to pick out some freshly-cut stems, otherwise, order an arrangement from your favorite flower shop. (Think Scott’s Flowers on the Square.)

“You can search balloon art on TikTok and after a couple videos you will be a balloon artist,” she said.

ALL ABOUT FOOD

The charcuterie trend exploded in 2020 and people are still creating beautiful food boards out of more than just meat and cheese.

“You can find charcuterie boards for breakfast, brunch, fruits and veggies, snacks, cookies and sweets,” she said.

If designing your own board isn’t your thing, Megan suggests giving Sherri Littlejohn at Littlejohn Produce a call.

“She can create anything your heart and party desires,” she said.

(On a personal note, Sherri recently catered a bridal shower I hosted at my home and created absolutely stunning breakfast boards.)

When it comes to cocktails, Megan says wine spritzers are the perfect summer drink for your adult guests.

And for the kids? Get creative.

“I like making a big batch of colorful Kool-Aid and throwing in plastic toys like butterflies, fish and flowers for kid parties,” she said. “And nothing beats an ice-cold soda from Dublin Bottling Works for those larger gathering with varying tastebuds.”

DRESS TO IMPRESS

If you are playing hostess, make sure to look the part.

Summer is the perfect time to don a maxi dress, skirt or anything with a floral design for summer.

“The most important thing is to enjoy the summer and make the most of gathering with friends and family,” she said.

If you need a little (or a lot) of help throwing together your next shindig, give Megan a shout.

“If you want to throw a party, but don’t have the time to allocate to the planning phase then send me a message and I can do it for you,” she said. “And if you have already planned a party, but need help with decorations, I can handle that as well.

“I can turn your dream of the perfect party into a reality.”
