Is Stephenville’s historic downtown haunted? A series of ghost walks could answer that question.

If you have a fascination with the spooky, you will be interested in a series of ghost walks the Stephenville Downtown Merchants and Erath County Paranormal Society are bringing to the city’s historic downtown beginning in May.

“We are a group of people that believes the paranormal is real, and we don’t use Quija Boards or witchcraft,” Judi White, vice president of the Erath County Paranormal Society, told Beneath the Surface News. “We do investigations to find proof of the paranormal because all of us have had experiences from childhood through our adult lives.”

Judi said the group is currently working with several downtown businesses to investigate rumored tales of ghostly deeds.

“The Stephenville Rec Center is the most haunted building that we have come across yet; even the employees called us to come investigate,” she said.

She said the group once set up an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) recorder inside the Rec Hall and captured the voice of a man who died there several years ago.

She said the group is currently investigating another downtown business that is reportedly haunted.

“A woman dressed in period clothing has been seen coming down the stairs by every person who has owned that building and several customers,” Judi said.

Last week Judi said she went to the business to begin the investigation and something very strange happened.

“No one was inside the building except me and the owner. We went upstairs to set up the recorder and as soon as we got back downstairs, we heard a huge crash,” she said. “We ran back upstairs to see what happened, but there was nothing.”

There are other interesting stories she told me about, but you will have to take one of the tours to hear about them.

The ghost walks will take place on May 28, June 25, July 30, Aug. 27, Sept. 24, Oct. 14 and 15 and Oct. 21 and 22.

The tours will begin at the Stephenville Rec Hall at 8:30 and 9:15 p.m.

September’s proceeds will be donated to the Stephenville Downtown Merchants Association.

Tickets are $10 per person and $5 for kids 10 and under.
