Indoor/outdoor kennels, separate spaces for dogs and cats; Erath County Humane Society unveils plans for new shelter.

Officials with the Erath County Humane Society are giving residents a first look at plans for a new shelter.

“These plans are tentative and could change slightly, but we are very excited,” ECHS executive director Serena Wright told Beneath the Surface News.

The new facility will include separate areas for dogs and cats and space to quarantine sick animals, nursing mothers and strays.

A covered walkway will lead from the lobby and offices to the back of the facility where about 70 indoor/outdoor kennels will be located.

“One of the things we are most excited about is that there will be space for the animals to run and play outside,” Serena said. “And when it rains, we won’t have to worry about flooding and finding foster families to house the dogs.”

The new facility will be located on 17 acres on County Road 454 in Erath County.

“We have plenty of room to expand, which is great, but at this point we are just trying to raise enough money to get out of our current location,” she said.

The board is still working to raise money for construction and hopes to begin the bidding process soon.

Serena said the plan is to use local companies to build the new shelter.
