We shared this little tip on an Instagram reel a few months ago and it was so popular that I decided to do a quick blog post over it and share a little more information about it.
This is such an easy way to clean glass, I love doing it for my glass water bottle and also coffee pot.
By the way, this tip originally came for our salt cleaning hacks post.
You will need ice cubes and table salt.
Directions:
Fill glass container halfway with ice cubes. (I use a mix of whole cubes and crushed.)
Add in a few tablespoons of regular table salt.
Put the lid back on. If container doesn't have a lid, cover it with something secure like foil or press and seal so you can shake.
Shake vigorously for 30 seconds or until ice starts to break up, then rinse under warm water.
How does this work to clean glass?
On Chemistry Cachet, we always share the science behind how things work. Readers love this!
The science behind this is simply friction. The hard ice cubes combined with salt and shaking, make friction against the glass. I compare it to exfoliating your skin. It works the same way!

Getting glass bottles and containers clean can be tricky, but this hack sounds like a game-changer. For anyone who uses a glass pipe, keeping it clean is just as important for ensuring a smooth experience. A simple mixture of rubbing alcohol and coarse salt works wonders for glass pipes—just shake it gently and rinse with warm water, and you're good to go. It's similar to how you’d clean other glass containers, making sure they stay sparkling clean and free from residue. Whether it’s your favorite glass pipe or a bottle, regular cleaning makes a big difference in maintaining quality and function!
