Stephenville Medical & Surgical Clinic is partnering with Javara Research for a nationwide paid flu prevention research study.

Dr. Benjamin Marcum, a family medicine physician at SMSC, is leading the local effort and searching for healthy adults between the ages of 18-49.

Participants must be non-smokers (no nicotine) and have not received a flu shot within the past 12 months.

“This study is actually testing a long-acting antiviral as well as a flu vaccine,” Dr. Marcum told Beneath the Surface News.

The five-week study includes five patient visits.

On the first visit, participants will undergo labs and an assessment; the second visit will include four injections (one flu and three antiviral).

Then there will be three follow-up visits with labs.

Participants will be compensated up to $1,200.

“Since this is our third trial on this antiviral medication, I feel very confident that it’s safe,” Dr. Marcum said.

“We are super proud that our community members can contribute in a meaningful way to clinical research.”

There are currently 44 spots available for the study.
