Erath County SWAT team nabs 4 in major drug bust that nets 100 grams of meth.



Three Stephenville residents and a woman from Weatherford were taken into custody Thursday morning after a SWAT team with the Erath County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the 7400 block of FM 847.


“One of my deputies had some information about possible dealings of methamphetamine out of the residence,” Sheriff Matt Coates told Beneath the Surface News. “After further investigation with DPS, we obtained a search warrant, which produced just under 100 grams of methamphetamine and paraphernalia used in its distribution.


“It’s the most I have seen in a long time.”

Stephenville residents Stephen Smith, 32, Jeffery Champion, 35, and Courtney West, 33, and Weatherford resident Britney Clifton, 33, were all charged with delivery of a controlled substance and are being held at the Erath County Jail.


Champion has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2013 with charges that include theft by check in various counties, theft of service, theft of property, credit card abuse, theft of a firearm, and numerus counts of burglary of a vehicle.


Smith also has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2006 with charges that include minor in possession, possession of marijuana, unlawfully carrying a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia and two traffic violations.


West has faced past charges of possession of a controlled substance and credit card abuse involving the elderly.
