Back-to-school season is almost here and whether you’re shopping for school supplies, getting the kids ready for another year or packing for college, don’t forget one important item that deserves a fresh start - the backpack.

I recently shared my simple backpack cleaning method on Instagram and it quickly went viral because it is so easy, works incredibly well and only requires two simple products.

As an investigative chemist, I’ve tested many different cleaning and stain-removal methods over the years, and this one has consistently given me the best results while still being gentle on backpack fabrics.

My daughter Amelia is heading into third grade with her favorite ballerina Pottery Barn backpack, and instead of replacing it, we gave it a good reset.

After one wash, it looked fresh, clean, and ready for another school year.

Step 1: Pretreat stains

Before washing, spray any visible stains, dirt or heavily soiled areas with a pH neutral stain remover.

This gives the cleaner time to begin breaking down the soils before the backpack goes into the washing machine.

This popular stain remover is definitely worth the hype.

If your backpack has crumbs inside, empty every pocket first and give it a good shake outside before treating the fabric.

Step 2: Wash gently

Place the backpack inside your washing machine and wash it on a cold, gentle cycle using one eco-laundry strip.

I’ve found this combination cleans exceptionally well without using an excessive amount of detergent, helping protect both the fabric and the backpack’s structure.

Step 3: Air dry

Skip the dryer and allow the backpack to air dry, which helps maintain its shape and extend its life for many more school adventures.

As moms, we often assume backpacks need replacing every school year, but many quality backpacks simply need a good cleaning.

Taking a few minutes to wash them can remove dirt, food stains and everyday grime while making them look almost new again.

Sometimes the simplest solutions really are the best.

A quick backpack reset can help everything feel just a little more organized as the busy school season begins.

Wishing all of our area students, teachers, college students and families a wonderful start to the new school.
