Beneath the Book Club kicks off with Next of Kin, an angsty legal crime thriller.

Updated: Jan 8

With more than 100 people weighing in on Beneath the Book Club’s inaugural read, a clear decision has been made: Next of Kin by Kia Abdullah is January’s pick.

I’m excited to delve into this legal crime thriller. It will be the first time I’ve read this author’s work.

Take a look at what Goodreads has to say about the book: “On an ordinary working day Leila Syed receives a call that cleaves her life in two. Her brother-in-law’s voice is filled with panic. He’s at his son’s nursery to pick up Max. But he isn’t there.

“Leila was supposed to drop Max off that morning. But she forgot.

“Racing to the carpark, she grasps the horror of what she has done. Max has been locked in her car for six hours on the hottest day of the year.

“But she’s too late.

“What follows is an explosive, high-profile trial, that will tear the family apart. But as the case progresses it becomes clear there’s more to this incident than meets the eye…

“A gripping, brave and tense courtroom drama, Next of Kin will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final, heart-stopping page.”

BOOK CLUB MEMBERSHIP

Many of you have asked how to become a member of Beneath the Book Club, but here’s the thing: There is no official membership.

If you want to participate, simply follow Beneath the Surface News to get the monthly reads and take part in the discussions.

Because we are an online group, there is no limit to the number of people who can participate.

At the start of each month, I’ll post three books to choose from and readers will vote on the one they want to read.

I will follow up with a time for an online discussion on the Beneath the Surface News Facebook page.

We’ll wing it these first couple of months until we get our groove.

Feel free to share ideas on ways to make the book club more fun and inclusive.

Now, let’s start Next of Kin and have a discussion about the book on Thursday, Jan. 25.
