Appoint or hold a special election? SISD board of trustees to decide how to fill unexpired term.

Stephenville ISD superintendent Dr. Eric Cederstrom

The Stephenville ISD board of trustees will begin formal discussions next Monday, July 17, on how to proceed with filling the unexpired term of Place 4.

Luke Sims resigned as a trustee last week citing time restraints.

Sims emailed SISD superintendent Dr. Eric Cederstrom last week explaining his decision to step down.

“My current professional schedule has not allowed me to put SISD as a priority and that doesn’t do my position as a board member justice. SISD deserves someone that can put 100% of their time and effort into the district and some of my new clients just don’t allow me to be that individual,” a portion of the letter states.

Dr. Cederstrom told Beneath the Surface News that Sims’ resignation was a “complete surprise.”

Because there is more than one year remaining in the term, the board has 180 days to decide whether to appoint someone to the position through May 2024 or hold a special election.

“In years past, the board has opted to appoint someone, but every board is different,” Cederstrom said.

Appointing someone through next May will save the district from the added expense of holding a special election.

Place 4 will go on the ballot next May when voters will decide who should fill the one-year remainder of the term.
