Stephenville Fire Chief Jimmy Chew announces his retirement. And it was emotional.

In an emotional speech given to the Stephenville City Council Tuesday night, longtime fire chief Jimmy Chew announced his retirement.

After more than 50 years with the Stephenville Fire Department, his last day will be July 30.

“It is very easy to be perceived at good at what you do when you are surrounded by the best at what they do,” Chew told the council. “All of the people that have ever worked at this FD are my brothers and sisters and they always will be.”

Then Chew thanked his wife and “best friend” Betty.

“She has never complained when plans had to be changed at the last minute or I didn’t come home on time and she was always there with an encouraging word and advice when I wanted and needed it,” he said. “I would not be where I am without her beside me.”

Then he was given a standing ovation.
