Rumor has it that a new series by Taylor Sheridan will begin filming in downtown Stephenville soon.

Construction for the set of 1883: The Bass Reeves Story appears to be underway at the Downtown Plaza in Stephenville.

Rumors have been swirling for months about a television series that will be partially filmed in Stephenville, and now, all indications appear that the project is a go.

Friends and readers of Beneath the Surface News sent a few pictures of some unusual activity happening around the Erath County Courthouse over the past week, and on Saturday, I took this photo of the Downtown Plaza which shows part of the set.

(I’ve been told that it’s the hanging gallows.)

City officials aren’t commenting on the excitement because an apparent contract with the production company prevents them from doing so, but my sources tell me that the Taylor Sheridan series will center around the life of Bass Reeves, the country’s first black deputy U.S. marshal who would later become one of the greatest frontier heroes in our nation’s history.

The period drama – 1883: The Bass Reeves Story - is part of the Yellowstone universe starring David Oyelowo as the legendary lawman who is believed to have captured more than 3,000 bad guys without ever being wounded.

How cool is that?

I’ve been told that filming is set to take place in Stephenville from May 1-3, but that’s not been officially confirmed so don’t take that to the bank just yet.

Meanwhile, you’ll want to read up on the fascinating story of Bass Reeves and Sheridan’s plans to tell it.

The series will premier exclusively on Paramount Plus, but a release date has not been announced.

Stay tuned.
