After the unexpected passing last week of Erath County Commissioner Jim Buck, county officials are moving forward with plans to fill his unexpired term.

On Thursday, Erath County Judge Brandon Huckabee outlined a plan to ensure that precinct 4 continues to function normally.

In a letter to community members, Huckabee outlines the following:

“I want to first start with my continued prayers for Commissioner Buck’s family and friends.

“He leaves a hole in our community and on our commissioners’ court, and a legacy of service and dedication to our County.

“As we take on the days ahead, it is my duty, as outlined in Texas Local Government Code 87.042, to appoint someone to fill his current term through December 31, 2026, and then, after the November election, to fill the next term from January 1, 2027, through December 31, 2028.

“The opening will be on the primary ballots in spring 2028.

“To be transparent and find the person to help Precinct 4 through this transition, I will have a questionnaire packet available in my office at the Erath County Courthouse for anyone interested in the appointment.”

The packets are due by Oct. 14.

Huckabee says he will then meet the candidates and work toward having someone in place by Nov. 1.

“I will also engage with the citizens in the precinct to get their thoughts and feedback so that, to the best of my ability, I fill the position with someone who will step in and help our community move forward,” Huckabee said.

Anyone with questions should call Judge Huckabee’s office at 254-965-1452.
