Perhaps it was that famous chicken fried steak and cream gravy that did it.
Or maybe it was those mouth-watering waffle fries.
And what about all that pie?
Whatever it was that tickled the tastebuds of those affiliated with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, well, those of us in Stephenville know they got it right.
The iconic Jake & Dorothy’s Cafe was honored with the 2022 title of “Best Game Day Grub,” so a big congratulations goes out to Kerry Roach and her team.
It was, after all, Kerry's parents, Jake and Dorothy Roach, who first opened the café in June 1948.
At the time, Harry Truman was president and the latest inventions were the polaroid camera and the transistor radio. That year also brought in Porsche and NASCAR.
But city officials say the most noteworthy invention in 1948 took place right here in Stephenville when Jake & Dorothy’s unveiled the waffle fry.
“If you have not experienced the delicious crisp, fried potato greatness that is a Jake & Dorothy’s waffle fry, then you are really missing out,” a statement from city officials reads. "Then there is the whole chicken fried steak thing. Served on top of a bed of cream gravy, these are hands down, the best chicken fried steaks you will ever eat in your entire life. Ever.”
Over 70 years later, Jake & Dorothy’s still serves up consistent, delicious food made from scratch.
Jake & Dorothy’s has been featured on The Daytripper, Texas Country Reporter and was named among Texas Monthly’s 40 Best Small Town Cafes.
