Cooking, touring and honeymooning in Athens, Greece. Stephenville woman shares her travel experience

Bryan and Shay Manley enjoyed a cooking class in Athens.

Stephenville residents Bryan and Shay Manley were married in March, then set out on a week-long honeymoon in Athens, Greece.

“We stayed at an Airbnb that overlooked Athens with an amazing direct view of the Acropolis,” Shay wrote in an email to Beneath the Surface News.

The view of the Acropolis from the couple’s Airbnb.

“Plaka was amazing and so entertaining. It’s a busy part of Athens that has a lot of restaurants and shops. I personally loved Little Kook, it’s a Christmas-themed restaurant in Plaka. The Acropolis was beautiful but take your walking shoes.”

Shay says booking a trip to Athens in the off-season is less costly and you’ll enjoy pleasant, cooler weather.

The couple took a cooking class in Athens, which she suggests doing.

“It was amazing and super yummy,” she said. “Also, the alcohol is pretty cheap and there’s kitties everywhere!”

Here are a few more tips she gives for touring Athens.

• Splurge on airfare because the flight is long (19 hours depending on layovers).

• Experiment with the food scene and step out of your comfort zone.

“You never know what you’ll fall in love with,” Shay said. “I always refused to eat veal, but I had it in Athens and it was delicious!”

• Check Groupon for things to do.

• Make sure to check out the flea markets where you will find amazing deals and souvenirs.
