Stephenville’s senior citizen population is finally getting a new place to hang out.

And it’s long overdue.

Building a new facility has been in talks for years, but construction is officially underway at Stephenville City Park, adjacent from Splashville.

The 7,200 square-foot building comes with a $1.7 million price tag and will include a catering kitchen, office and reception area, classroom and 2,600 square feet of event space that can be rented on the evenings and weekends.

“There will also be a lounge where people can play cards, games and watch television,” Daron Trussell, the city’s director of Parks and Leisure Services, told Beneath the Surface News.

Construction is expected to be complete early next year.

“Our main goal is to provide our seniors with a nice, new space to enjoy, but more than that we are excited to add more programming opportunities,” Trussell said. “We want to attract new seniors to the programs.”
