As concerns grow over the spread of the New World Screwworm in Texas, the Erath County AgriLife Extension Office is hosting an informational meeting about the situation on July 23.
The move comes as ranchers across the state increase monitoring efforts to protect their livestock.
The July 23 event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Stephenville ISD Bond Auditorium.
Registration will begin at 5.
The program will include situational updates, response and preparations and movement and marketing.
The program is designed for livestock producers, agricultural professionals, veterinarians, wildlife managers and anyone interested in learning more about the potential impacts of New World screwworm,” a press release from AgriLife states.
“Participants will have the opportunity to hear from subject matter experts and ask questions regarding response plans and best management practices.”
Attendees will earn two CEUs and will need to provide their license number.

The Texas Department of Agriculture has launched a new interactive map that allows the public to track confirmed cases, view fly trap locations and report suspected infestations.
What is New World Screwworm?
According to The Texas Tribune, “New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly that is attracted to living tissue, burrowing their larvae into open wounds.
“After they hatch, the maggots then feed off that living flesh, causing damage to the animal. If untreated, the damage can even cause the animal to die.”
State and federal officials have been tracking the northern migration since 2023.
“In response to the cases, USDA and the Texas Animal Health Commission have ramped up animal surveillance of animals near the confirmed detections by setting up zones around each infestation.
“Animals are not allowed to leave infested areas without being properly inspected,” The Tribune reports.
