Erath County commissioners have appointed Larry Smith to serve as chairman of the Erath County Historical Commission.

Smith has been a member of the commission since 2020.

“I look forward to partnering with area museums, Tarleton State University, our local Main Street program, the Texas Forts Trail and the Texas Historical Commission,” Smith said. “For

our stories to continue, we must tell our stories.”

The Erath County Historical Commission serves as the primary point of contact for individuals who need more information about particular aspects of history and historic sites in the area.

The Texas Legislature authorized counties to establish County Historical Commissions to assist county commissioners’ courts and the Texas Historical Commission in the preservation of historic and cultural resources.

Smith is a graduate of Stephenville High School and Tarleton State University.

He serves as chair of the Boy Scouts of America’s Old Comanche Trails District and is a member of the Texas Trails Council, Stephenville Lions Club, Stephenville Masonic Lodge No. 267, and the Clairette Masonic Lodge.

He and his wife Julie are members of First United Methodist Church Stephenville.
